Having only searched a few beaches and 1 field in the 3 months of owning my Minelab Equinox 800, I decided to join a club. Every outing with the Nox 800 had returned coins, modern and old but I wanted to explore some proper rural areas. On my first day of membership, I was so excited to find my first coin of the day, and oldest to date, a William and Mary penny from 1691. 5 metres away, yet another signal.
I started digging, then as I broke the plug, a little gold disc popped out and glistened at me. I was so overwhelmed from getting my first coin, this one didn't really register. Was it a coin or a button? I really didn't know the significance of what I'd just found. All I knew was it was very decorative and looked special. I continued my day and at the end, a fellow club member asked how had I done.
I excitedly mentioned my 1691 coin and casually mentioned, "Oh and I also found this usual one". When he saw it, he knew instantly and couldn't believe it. A super rare, GOLD quarter stater, in excellent condition. The find was definitely the find of the day and so many members mentioned they'd been detecting 20, 30 , 40 years and never found such a rare and fantastic coin. I still can't believe that the little coin had been sat 15cm down in the soil for over 2000 years and when it popped out, it looked brand new.
What I found was later confirmed as a Gold Quarter Stater of Tasciovanos of the Catuvellauni and is a Tasciovanos Quatrefoil Type. Quatrefoil pattern of four Corn Ears, back-to-back Crescents at Centre, Teardrops in Angles. Reverse: Horse facing right, three Horse muzzles above, uncertain motif below. Extremely Rare ABC Number: 2583. It is listed as ABC 2583 on page 129 in Ancient British Coins by Chris Rudd. A quarter stater of the tribal leader Tasciovanos circa. 25 BC -AD 10.
